1 To unmount the hard disk

The first stage is to unmount the hard disk (seek on the site of the manufacturer or on the net for the service manual of your notebook). Generally it is an easy and simple operation.

2 To recover the data

There is much way of recovering the data of a laptop hard disk, the simplest way is to connect your hard disk to another PC.

With this intention you must use either a 2.5' ' usb or firewire drive enclosure or a laptop hard drive adaptor kit 2.5 to 3.5 inch IDE hdd. Once connected simply copy the data of your laptop hard disk towards your PC.

3 Damaged or unreadable data

In this case you must use a tool as Unstoppable Copier. It is a tool which makes it possible to read the data of a damaged disc, if it encounters a file it cannot copy, the file will be skipped and copying will continue.

4 Case of a very damaged hard disk

In this case it is necessary to use Ultimate boot Cd for Windows (tool that everyone should have) Firstly it should be checked that the data can be read using Explorer XP.Then launch Unstoppable Copier which is included in Ultimate Boot Cd, choose for example the source drive as C: which was the laptop hard disc and made E: the destination drive which is the hard disc on the desktop PC.

Let us be honest with you, it does not exist sure solution to recover your data after a partition disaster or a hard disk breakdown.
Rather than to invest in expensive systems to recover data after a hard disk failure, it is better to invest in prevention and safety.
That can be done on several levels :
The first : to buy an external USB hard drive with comfortable capacity, it is the first step for the security of your data, and it is also the cheapest solution.
The second : consist in buying a software like Acronis True Image 11 that will create an image of your hard drive which coupled to your external hard disk will enable you to restore your system in a few minutes such as it was at the time of your last backup, without reinstalling neither operating systems neither software nor drivers.
Note that you can schedule the backups which can be daily or several times per days.
The third : which can be an alternative of the second or a reinforcement of the second is the use of a hard drive manager and disaster recovery utility, which can allow you, to repair, resize, move one or more partition, repair the master boot record etc...
For this task you should use Acronis Disk Director 10.0 The Complete disk management software suite.
The advantage of these basic solutions is that your data are immediately secure, you work in trust and safety, moreover you can change your laptop/pc and keep your backup system.

The formatting became an easy and current operation, but on a laptop it can contain certain unforeseen risks, nowadays the majority of the laptops are sold with a restoration system located in a hidden partition to facilitate the restoration of the operating system, one can also finds in the hidden partition a media player customized by the manufacturer for your machine.
The problems:
Certain manufacturer to decrease their expenses do not provide any more a DVD of restoration. They invite you at the time of the first starting to burn a restoration system DVD.
It is very important to make this or these dvd because in the event of formatting (low level format) or of breakdown of your hard disk you will not have any more access to your legally bought operating system.
There is today a very significant number of user which seeks on Internet to recover their Windows OS after having to erase their hidden partition to gain place, or to get rid of a virus, or because the installation of another operating system make the hidden partition inaccessible.
In the same way for the partitions where are installed media player, it is necessary to be sure to have the DVD of reinstalment, and often the reinstalment works only on the same type of partition as in the beginning.
